Troop 499 History
1984-1993
Every March the troop visited the Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio to see the Air Force Museum. In April, the troop went on its annual overnight bike trip to the Lower Huron Metropark starting from the St. Robert Bellarmine Parking lot - they certainly prayed for no rain!
In May, the troop went to the CYO retreat campout. Troop 499 was one of the longest attending troops in the Detroit area. The troop continued to feed the blind and mentally disabled during the Christmas season at the Lenox Center near the Detroit River.
Early in 1988, Colin O'Sullivan participated in the World Scout Jamboree, representing Troop 499 in Australia. In the summer of 1988, the troop retuned to the Florida Sea Base High Adventure Camp. The scouts and leaders experienced an Out Island adventure while enjoying the natural setting of the Florida Keys. Other scouts returned to the Bruce trail for their fifty miles of memories, in the Summer of 1988.
The troop has annually earned the National Honor/Quality Unit Award as well as the Pius XIl and National Camping Awards.
In 1989, Terry Worden became Scoutmaster and held the position for three years. The troop began going to Lost Lake Scout Reservation in Farwell, Michigan. Like other summer camps, the troop sets up its own camp and live in tents while going about earning merit badges for a full week.
They continued to camp in the winter and earn the Polar Bear Badges. They hiked the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains.
In 1990, the troop awarded its 50th eagle rank, Tim O'Sullivan.
For four consecutive years (1991 through 1994), Troop 499 attended the Scout Invitational Jamboree at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York through the efforts of three former Troop 499 scouts (Mike Avey, Colin O'Sullivan and Tim O'Sullivan, who were cadets at the academy).
In the summer of 1991, eight scouts and three leaders ventured to the Adirondacks in upstate New York for high adventure. They repelled a cliff and backpacked 19 miles roundtrip to Mt. Marcy. They stopped at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
In 1992, Frank Pascoe became Scoutmaster. Troop 499 once again hiked the northern most 50 mile leg of the Bruce Trail from Tobermory along the Georgian Bay. In December, the troop continued to feed and entertain the blind and mentally disabled at the Lenox Center in Detroit.
In the summer of 1993, Roger Buelow led a group of scouts to a high adventure outing in Canada to earn their scuba diving certificates.
